The film programme for Tallinn Photomonth 2019 offers a curated selection of recent and historical moving image works by artists from across the realms of documentary, fiction, experimental film, and video art.
Life After proposes dialogue as a form of collective escapism from contemporary diseases like technological singularity, obsessive individualism and constructed identities. In a moment of anxiety about global disaster and collapse, the programme offers glimpses of emergent new world orders positioned against fantasies that never materialized, and others that still might. The audience is invited to join in a visual conversation between two curators, 19 filmmakers and the stories of alternative histories, parallel realities and possible futures. Three evenings of film, each followed by a moderated talk with the filmmakers and lasting a total of about 2 hours.

Ingel Vaikla is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Belgium. She graduated from the Department of Photography of the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA 2015) and film programme of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (MA 2017) and is currently attending the postgraduate residency programme HISK in Ghent. Her research focuses on the relationship between architecture and its users, and the representation of architecture in photography and film. Vaikla’s films The House Guard (2015) and Roosenberg (2017) have been screened internationally at film festivals and art institutions such as IDFA in Amsterdam, Màntica Theatre Festival in Cesena, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna and Tramway in Glasgow. Vaikla has curated experimental film programmes with a focus on artists’ moving images for the International Symposion for Internal architecture SISU and for Narva Art Residency.
Jesse Cumming is a film curator and writer based in Toronto. He has curated, co-curated, and presented programs with The Museum of Modern Art, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Collectif Jeune Cinéma, the Volksbühne Berlin, and more. Since 2016 he has served as Programming Associate for the Wavelengths section of the Toronto International Film Festival, and in 2016 he developed Vertical Features, a Toronto screening series dedicated to experimental non-fiction film and video. He presently sits on the steering committee of the Toronto Film & Media Seminar and is a founding collective member of MICE Magazine, a publication dedicated to Moving Image Culture, Etc. His writing has appeared in Cinema Scope, The Brooklyn Rail, MUBI Notebook, Filmmaker Magazine, Canadian Art, and more.
