Where Even Sunrays Will Not Reach, organised by Tallinn City Museum Kalamaja Museum brings black and white photographs from the 1920s–1940s by one of the first professional Estonian photojournalists Hans Soosaar into the limelight. His photographs depict life in the basement apartments in the Kalamaja area. As a professional photojournalist, Soosaar has captured local life between the 1920s and 1950s and has provided the images with detailed descriptions and exact locations. Displays placed in front of the same houses photographed by Soosaar almost 100 years ago form an urban gallery, bringing the Kalamaja inhabitants captured in Soosaar’s photographs out of their damp dark basement apartments onto the streets filled with autumn light. It is hoped that this will provide a jolt to the everyday life of contemporary Kalamaja inhabitants and visitors, and spark discussions about how social norms and the standard of living have changed over time.
